Fredrica Smith, MD
Dr. Smith is a rheumatologist who has been in private practice in Los Alamos since 1975. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College with an A.B. in physics and from Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Smith completed her intership and internal medicine residency at UNM Hospitals, along with a rheumatology fellowship at the University of Virginia.
She says of her decision to practice, and live, in Los Alamos:
"In 1975, the blue sky of New Mexico drew my husband and me back here to stay. A nurse practitioner, Christina Nelson CFNP, joined me in 1986, and Dr. Sarah Cassell joined us in January 2008.
"I have served on committees for various medical organizations, including American College of Rheumatology, American College of Physicians, and NM Medical Society, and on various drug utilization review organizations, along with the Los Alamos Indigent Health Care Task Force in the 1990s. I was appointed to the Physicians Practice Advisory council to CMS (Medicare) beginning in May 2008.
"I also enjoy activities outside medicine. I swim daily and have worked with our Aquatic Center in Los Alamos continuously since planning for the Center started in 1984. I currently serve on the Parks and Recreation Board for Los Alamos County and have also been on that board in the past. I have played string bass since junior high school and play with our local symphony and other music organizations. I work with the Bryn Mawr College alumnae admissions network, which gives me the pleasure of talking with brilliant young women about the college. Those and other activities help me to keep the balance that I think we all need to cope with care of patients and the practice of medicine."
